2年前のDJの時もビンラディンの画像ジャケットを掲げて、ささやかに意思は示したし、その後、何かにつけ。始めて聴いてから30年経って、それでもこの曲は指標のひとつ。
ではあるが、昨今のレイシズムやヘイトなどというカタカナ語を付けた運動がどうにも・・・・・年を取った、おっさんになった証拠かもしれないが、どうも安易なカタカナ語には眉に唾を付けてしまう。「人種・民族差別」という言葉や「憎悪」という、これまで一般に普通に使っていた言葉を、カタカナ語に置き換えるようになったのは、いつからなんやろうか?? そんなカタカナ語を口に出すことにも、聞くことも、目に触れることにも物凄く違和感がある。 言葉本来持つ、おどろおどろしい部分を封じ込めて柔らかく、そして耳障りよく、という意図的な作為も感じてしまう。
僕が散見する範囲ではあるが、レイシズムには反対する側も、その対象に多くなっている側も、どちらも負けず劣らず口が汚く、下品で、クソがクソと言い合っている様相。そしてどちらも天秤は我が重いとばかり、相手の話、どころか、その他からも、決して耳を貸さない。兎に角下品極まりなく品性を疑うばかり。
この曲は、1984年にSpecial A.K.A.名義で出た唯一のアルバム『In The Studio』に収録されている。スペシャルズ時代からイギリスにおいて白人と黒人の混ざったメンバーによるバンドだったが、リーダーのジェリー・ダマーズの思想や意思をより強く伝えるバンドとして、この一枚で終わったのは残念ではあるが、意思の強いメッセージを届けるためには、快楽性の高い音楽とユーモアを伴ってというものも、曲解かもしれないが伝わる。そんな一枚で、これまでずっと愛聴しているし、ことあるごとに胸に刻んでいる曲が、この曲。レイシストという言葉を周りやテレビ、新聞等のマスメディアから周囲の人たちが使って居なかった時代からずっと。
